How to organize extracurricular activities for applications

Published · Vithi team

An activities list is most useful when it explains what you actually did. You can build that record gradually, without trying to make every experience sound like a major award.

Record the basics once

For each activity, note the organization, dates, time commitment and your role. Add a contact or link only where sharing it is appropriate. Keep a private version with more detail than an application form allows.

Describe action and outcome

Write one sentence about a problem or goal and one about your contribution. If you measured an outcome, explain how. Avoid inflated numbers or implying you led work that belonged to a team.

Capture learning

What became easier, what surprised you, and what would you change? These details can later support an interview answer or statement. An ordinary activity with thoughtful reflection can be more informative than an impressive title with no substance.

Select for each application

Follow each application’s limits and choose entries that show relevant interests and commitments. Do not force every activity into one theme; a clear, honest record is stronger than a manufactured story.
