How to ask a teacher for a recommendation letter

Published · Vithi team

A good recommendation request is clear about the deadline and gives the teacher material they can use. It also respects their ability to decline.

Ask the right person early

Choose someone who has seen your work, growth or contribution closely. Ask well before the official deadline and explain the programs or opportunities you are applying to.

Provide a concise information pack

Share the submission instructions, due date, your relevant work together, and a few examples you hope they can speak to. Include your current resume or activity record if helpful. Do not write a letter for them or ask for claims they cannot support.

Track the real submission step

Some systems email the recommender after you enter their details. Check that the invitation arrived, and note whether the application system shows the letter as received. A polite reminder near the deadline can help, but give time for a response.

Close the loop

Thank the recommender after submission and let them know the outcome if you are comfortable sharing it. Keep their letter confidential if the application process requires it.
